Packaging is only as strong, sustainable and effective as the material it is made of.
Irfan Cüven Head of Sales Promotion & Sales, PAWI Packaging Deutschland GmbH
For the production of packaging, the focus is on two materials: the cardboard and the printing ink. When developing new packaging, the challenge is to define a combination that guarantees protection, a good look and sustainability. This is precisely where we see how important sound material know-how is – because the right choice of materials is the foundation of any successful packaging solution.
Cardboard
Not all cardboard is the same. It has a multi-layer structure, usually comprising three layers. Cardboard combines stability, printability and ease of use, making it the preferred packaging material for many sectors, particularly in the food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries. Materials we process at PAWI include virgin-fibre cardboard for the highest hygiene requirements, recycled cardboard for ecological packaging solutions and innovative barrier cardboard. Barrier cardboard packaging has established itself as a sustainable alternative to plastic in recent years. This cardboard has the following characteristics:
- Dispersion barrier for medium resistance to grease and moisture
- No use of fluorochemicals
- No optical brightening agents (OBAs)
For our packaging, the only cardboard we use for direct contact has defined quality characteristics for folding, grooving and scoring capability as well as printability.
Printing inks
Printing inks shape the first impression of your packaging – in terms of both look and feel. At PAWI, we prefer to use low-migration, food-safe inks and have extensive know-how in the field of water-based and solvent-free ink systems and their effect. Particular focus is placed on the Equinox colour technology used at PAWI, which allows us to greatly expand the colour range compared to CMYK. Printing in the expanded colour range enables highly precise reproduction of multiple Pantone colours. Brilliant results are achieved while simultaneously reducing special colours – a plus for resource conservation and repeatability.
Of course, we can also process all Pantone and metallic colours on a wide range of materials
Did you know that varnish can create haptic effects? Variants such as soft, sand and textured varnishes are possible here.
