Packaging for chilled food: what matters for carton packaging in refrigerated displays

Packaging for chilled foods has to meet specific requirements. Moisture, fluctuating temperatures and high demands on hygiene, stability and product presentation all influence the choice of material, structural design and print. To ensure reliable performance throughout the cold chain, packaging must be tailored to the product, production process and retail environment.

Moisture and condensation in refrigerated displays

Moisture and condensation play an important role in chilled food applications. During filling, storage, transport and presentation in refrigerated displays, changing temperatures can cause moisture to form on or around the packaging. If this is not taken into account when selecting the material, construction and surface treatment, both the stability of the carton packaging and the print quality may be affected.

Depending on the product and application, it may therefore be advisable to use suitable cartonboard grades, coatings, varnishes or adapted adhesive solutions. The specific application is always key. Product characteristics and conditions of use influence the requirements placed on the cartonboard, surface and construction. This applies, for example, to cheese, fish, delicatessen products or chilled convenience foods.

Ensuring stability throughout the cold chain

Packaging for chilled products must perform reliably not only on the shelf, but also during production, storage and transport. It is stacked, moved, picked and often processed on automated lines. Material, construction and adhesive bonding must therefore be designed to ensure that the packaging remains dimensionally stable even under demanding conditions.

Important factors include suitable cartonboard stiffness, secure adhesive bonding and good machinability on erecting, filling and packaging lines. Particularly for larger volumes, reliable carton packaging is essential to minimise disruptions in production and logistics.

Printing and surface finishes must suit the application

The print and surface finish of the packaging also need to be suitable for use in refrigerated displays. Moisture, abrasion and handling can place additional stress on the packaging. Inks, varnishes and coatings should therefore be selected to withstand these conditions and retain their visual and functional properties throughout their intended use.

This is particularly important when the packaging is visibly presented in retail environments. In refrigerated displays, product protection is not the only consideration – first impressions also matter. A clean appearance, clear information and high-quality presentation help reinforce the brand directly at the point of sale.

Combining packaging, product protection and shelf impact

Chilled foods are often sensitive products. The packaging must protect the product, help preserve its quality and at the same time provide an appealing presentation. Functional and design requirements therefore need to be considered together.

A suitable packaging solution takes into account not only the material and construction, but also handling, stackability, opening mechanisms, windows, information areas and brand presentation. The result is a solution that performs throughout the process and presents the product effectively in refrigerated displays.

Aligning packaging with the product and process from the outset

Many challenges arise when existing packaging solutions are adopted without reviewing the actual conditions of use. Differences in product characteristics, filling temperature, storage duration, transport routes or retail presentation may result in packaging that does not achieve the required stability or processability.

Material, coating, structural design and print should be adapted to the intended application during the development phase. This can help reduce complaints, production disruptions and unnecessary costs. At the same time, the packaging can be designed to combine functionality, economic efficiency and strong visual appeal.

Developing carton packaging specifically for chilled foods

For chilled foods, the interaction between product, packaging and process determines whether a solution will perform successfully in practice. Material, construction, surface and processing should therefore be considered together from the outset.

Thanks to our experience in developing carton packaging for demanding food applications, we understand the typical challenges associated with chilled products. From the concept phase onwards, we tailor the packaging to the product, filling line, storage and logistics processes. This results in packaging solutions that combine product protection and process reliability with a strong presentation at the point of sale.
