Sustainable herb packaging made from cardboard
In collaboration with Mäder Kräuter AG, we have developed an innovative cardboard packaging solution for herbs that replaces conventional plastic trays. The solution combines sustainability with reliable product protection and efficient handling – ideal for retail applications.
Product protection and efficient packaging solution
The cardboard herb packaging combines reliable product protection with reduced material usage and efficient handling.
By using unbleached virgin fibre board with an integrated rPET window, we reduce the plastic content by 83%. This corresponds to a saving of around 60 tonnes of plastic per year.
At the same time, the packaging meets high standards in terms of product protection and functionality. Fresh herbs remain in optimal condition during transport, storage and presentation at the point of sale. An ultra-thin coating regulates moisture and helps maintain freshness over several days. The transparent window also allows for quick freshness checks at the point of sale.
As a well-designed alternative to plastic, the solution not only reduces the use of fossil-based materials but also lowers the overall packaging weight by around 25%. At the same time, the robust construction ensures secure stackability and easy handling in everyday retail operations.
Integrated packaging and logistics concept
The packaging is part of a comprehensive system that goes beyond the individual product. Its natural look enhances product presentation and strengthens the perception of sustainable assortments.
In addition, we implement a resource-efficient reusable logistics system using IFCO containers. This eliminates the need for additional corrugated outer packaging and further reduces material consumption.
The result is a fully integrated solution that combines sustainability, efficiency and product safety.
