Packaging is only as strong, sustainable and effective as the material it is made of.

In packaging production, two materials take centre stage: cardboard and printing inks. When developing new packaging, the challenge lies in defining a combination that ensures protection, visual appeal and sustainability. This is exactly where our material expertise makes the difference – because the right choice of materials is the foundation of every successful packaging solution.

Cardboard: the foundation of every packaging solution

Not all cardboard is the same. It has a multi-layer structure, usually comprising three layers. Cardboard combines stability, printability and ease of use. As a result, it is the preferred packaging material for numerous sectors – particularly in the food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries.

At PAWI, we process virgin fibre board for the highest hygiene requirements, recycled board for sustainable packaging solutions, as well as innovative barrier board.

Barrier board packaging has established itself in recent years as a sustainable alternative to plastic. It is characterised by the following properties:

  • Dispersion barrier for medium resistance to grease and moisture
  • No use of fluorochemicals
  • No optical brightening agents (OBAs)

For our packaging, the only cardboard we use for direct contact has defined quality characteristics for folding, grooving and scoring capability as well as printability.

Printing inks: combining impact and functionality

Printing inks shape the first impression of your packaging – both visually and haptically.

Therefore, we use low-migration, food-safe printing inks and have extensive expertise in water-based and solvent-free ink systems and their performance.

A particular focus is on Equinox colour technology, which is used at PAWI. This enables us to significantly expand the colour gamut beyond CMYK. As a result, many Pantone colours can be reproduced with high precision, while reducing the use of spot colours. This improves both resource efficiency and repeatability, while delivering brilliant print results.

We also process Pantone and metallic inks on a wide range of materials.
